The Renderers are Coming!

Actually, the Renderers are here...
They're getting stuck into it, and doing a good job too. Look what they've done to my stairs, Ma.

Finally we can see what our new front porch is going to be like.

The front face of the stairs and garage are ready to have the foam cladding applied before getting rendered: And this is how it's starting to look from inside... The top stairwell changes character from different angles:

On the inside, the insulation is in ready for the plasterers to start sheeting up. This is the Master Bedroom:

And this is the Office: And finally the main bathroom is getting ready for tiling: Its starting to all come together, the plaster work should be starting next week.

Curved Roofing arrives

Finally today the long awaited delivery from Ritek turned up on site: The packing material for the roof over the stairs would make a good skateboard ramp! Our builder had put lots of thought into installing the composite roof panels... Meanwhile, downstairs the ducting, plumbing, wiring and insulation had been installed. And the window frames did just that - framed the beautiful view across our terrace (well it will be once the scaffolding comes down!) We even found we had some "fossils" from the gum leaves that had dropped into the formwork just prior to the concrete pour. Seems a shame to cover them with the timber floorboards. Back upstairs, the roof on the garage quickly materialised: with a ready made ceiling inside: One more sheet to go... And Kate's happy! And the builders are happy! The Cheese Tree that survived: The view from the street: Within hours, the roof over the internal stairwell started taking shape as well: From the flat roof looking back; the "foam" panels are certainly strong enough to hold young Paul's weight (you would hope so, as there's a long drop underneath down two storeys). This is kinda what it will look like looking out the narrow windows in the top stairwell: And this is where the large skylight windows will be installed: Then the "slippery dip" is ready to go on, connecting the garage with the front door: This panel was always going to be a bit tricky, but with a bit of pushing and shoving and a trim here, and a nick there it was in place and fitted perfectly on the shaped walls: So, as the sun began to set it had been a big day, but the shape of the curved roofing was quite clear, with the inverted curve over the entry foyer now visible. We were quite amused at the local residents driving home from work craning their necks to see how it was shaping up. One of the neighbouring kids saw us staring at it and asked "Is that your house; are you waiting for it?" to which we could only say "Yes mate, we've been waiting a long time!"

Framing almost complete; everything but the front door!

Saturday Morning, 7am, had a site meeting with contractors to measure up balustrading for the balconies. It was cold, but the tide was in and the site felt so peaceful. Unfortunately we forgot to bring a camera with us, however lucky mobile phones have cameras in them these days. The wall framing is just about done, and the window frames have started to go in too! Here's what it will be like to look out the front door: Well there will be a set of timber stairs, just like on the model. For those who know the block, you can see how close it will be to the old power pole. We have also found some old ironbark posts to hold up the curved roof over the front door; they'll be here soon - this is where they'll go: Looking down from the driveway, you can see the circular beams to support the curved roof over the entry foyer: And this is what the view will be like walking up the stairs from the lounge room and looking up through the skylight windows at the trees: Looks like its just about ready to have the 3 curved roofs go on... can't wait!

Oh my God, we have a Garage!

After staring at our model for several years, and wishing it to come true, when we got back from the snow, we were gobsmacked to see that a familiar shape had materialised. This is the model: And this is what we saw from the street: This is how it looks from our driveway: And here you can see the shape of the staircase down to the front door, and the new steelwork to hold up the skylight window over the entry foyer: Sorry if we sound too excited, well it is our first Garage! And it does start to put the whole building into perspective. This milestone also marks the highest part of the building - aren't we supposed to plant a tree or something? Oh well we'll plant several soon... We were so excited in fact, that we went searching for a vantage point from the other side of the river (armed with a telephoto lens), to see what it looked like from that side. Here's what we found:

With the trees that we were able to retain, it is difficult to spot the old boatshed. Once the new building is completed (hiding the fresh timber and orange builders plastic) and rendered, you will hardly even know we're there!
